Hearing Loss

Book your appointment

Hearing loss commonly diminishes over time, so it can be tricky to know the extent of your loss. It’s not until you have your ears tested that you can understand how much you may have been missing out on.

If you and your family have been putting up with your hearing loss for awhile now, please do give us a call; you’re not alone and you don’t need to suffer.

Hearing loss affects some sounds and not others, meaning that you or your loved ones may experience problems with:

  • Loud sounds – these can cause discomfort due to a reduced dynamic range.
  • Particular speech sounds – for example, high-pitched sounds like ‘s’ or ‘f’.
  • Environments with lots of background noise – this is because it’s difficult to separate sounds.
  • Identifying directions – it can be hard to tell where sounds are coming from.

Your hearing can be damaged by a number of factors:

Short-term hearing loss

The effects of short-term hearing loss can often improve with a simple treatment plan or may require further investigations by a specialist. Short-term loss can be caused by:

  • Infection
  • Head injury
  • Excessive wax
  • Accident
  • Illness

Long-term hearing loss

Depending on the type of hearing loss, while long-term hearing loss cannot be cured, it can often be improved. This can be caused by:

  • Illness
  • Accident or trauma
  • Exposure to excessive noise or vibrations
  • Exposure to drugs and chemicals
  • Hereditary
  • Or can simply diminish as part of the normal ageing process

The best way to protect your ears is by wearing hearing protection. If you’re regularly exposed to loud noises then you could find custom made hearing protection a much more comfortable solution than regular ear plugs or ear muffs.
